The dramatic effect on Canadian border stores of tariffs and annexation threats can now be seen in February’s official land border crossings from the USA.
Taking the key measurement of American or Canadian citizens crossing the border by car in February shows a drop of almost a quarter in the number of Canadians taking their cars to the USA last month with a further 8% fall in their American counterparts coming the other way.
Even allowing for the fact that February was a leap year the 23% decrease in Canadians is huge. What the figures are also showing us is that for both nationalities the falls accelerated as the month progressed. The March daily data, when it is published, will be crucial.
